Liberty
A spirit of equal liberty appears fast to be gaining ground every where; which must afford satisfaction to every friend of mankind.
Liberty, when it begins to take root, is a plant of rapid growth.
God who gave us life gave us liberty. And can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are of the Gift of God?
Our liberty depends on our education, our laws, and habits . . . it is founded on morals and religion, whose authority reigns in the heart…
[N]either the wisest constitution nor the wisest laws will secure the liberty and happiness of a people whose manners are universally corrupt.
Statesmen, my dear sir, may plan and speculate for liberty, but it is religion and morality alone which can establish the principles upon which freedom can securely stand.
